I have been helping deal with fertility and habitual miscarriage for many years, here in Marlow and previously in London. Recently acupuncture has become widely talked about as a treatment for infertility, on its own or in conjunction with orthodox reproductive medicine.
I have attended numerous postgraduate courses on fertility including courses on supporting assisted reproductive technologies at the Royal Collage of Physicians. I am a member of the Acupuncture Fertility Network, an independent peer group of practitioners dedicated to supporting individuals and couples in all aspects of fertility care. I am also an accredited acupuncturist with the Zita West Network for Reproductive Health.
Researchers have shown that acupuncture may increase the success rates for women having IVF by almost 50%. Studies show that acupuncture may reduce stress hormones and possibly increases blood flow to the reproductive organs, all of which could improve the success rate of IVF and IUI. Importantly, acupuncture is speculated to help prevent cramping in the womb after IVF treatment, and this not only helps prevent expulsion of the embryo but it is also important in helping to prevent ectopic pregnancy, as well as assisting implantation of the embryo.
Acupuncture may help increase fertility in other ways too. It may counteract the effects of polycystic ovaries or Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome, commonly known as PCOS. In addition, it may provide more subtle enhancements such as reducing anxiety, promoting general wellbeing and treating insomnia, all of which is helpful for those taking fertility drugs.

In endometriosis the endometrial tissue found outside the womb can trigger an immune response which can prevent successful conception. In these cases the treatment aim is to modulate the specific immune response, as well as reducing painful periods commonly associated with this condition.
Male infertility and subfertility may also possibly be treated with acupuncture. Alongside my clinical experience some research has shown acupuncture to have a positive effect on sperm parameters.
