The National Institute for Health and Clinical Excellence guidelines on best practice now recommend a course of acupuncture as a first line treatment for low back pain.
Acupuncture can reduce pain, inflammation, muscle and joint stiffness, and so may help in the treatment of frozen shoulder.
Acupuncture may help to relieve symptoms of chronic fatigue syndrome such as musculoskeletal pain, headache, sleep problems, tiredness and depression.
Headaches and Migraines
There have now been many controlled trials of acupuncture for migraine in recent years showing acupuncture is significantly better than no treatment/basic care for managing migraine, and appears to be at least as effective as prophylactic drug therapy, with few contraindications or unpleasant side effects.
Irritable bowel syndrome
There is consistent evidence that a course of acupuncture improves IBS symptoms and general wellbeing.
Several systematic reviews of acupuncture for osteoarthritis of peripheral joints/knee and hip/knee alone have concluded that it is statistically superior to usual physician care. The expert guidelines of the Osteoarthritis Research Society International, recognise that it has clinically relevant benefits and a favourable safety profile, and they recommend acupuncture as a treatment option for osteoarthritis.
A systematic review of research on all types of acupuncture for Ménière's syndrome has suggested a beneficial effect from acupuncture, both for patients in the acute phase of the disease and for those who have had the syndrome for a number of years.
Acupuncture can be an effective treatment for a huge range of conditions. Please ring the clinic for any enquiries and information on how we can help.
