Acupuncture can be especially useful at all stages of pregnancy. I recommend that most mothers-to-be consider having it every four to six weeks or so as part of a maintenance program for promoting well-being during pregnancy. It's great for relieving stress and it can help to remedy some of the more common ailments of pregnancy such as morning sickness and back pain.

There's plenty it can do in the last few weeks of pregnancy too in helping to prepare you for the birth. For example, it can help to induce labour, or to turn breech babies, as well as to help with pain relief during the birth itself. It is recommended women to come to us on a weekly basis from 36 weeks onwards for labour preparation.

There is increasing research evidence highlighting the clinical benefits that it brings. It can treat conditions that are often seen as part of normal pregnancy and here are some of the common complaints women choose to see me for help with:

Morning sickness and pregnancy nausea
Backache, sciatica, carpal tunnel, cramps
Pelvic pain and symphysis pubis dysfunction
Indigestion, heartburn, abdominal pain, constipation
Haemorrhoids, varicose veins
Malpresentation including breech
Anxiety, insomnia, stress, tiredness

POST NATAL ACUPUNCTURE

For centuries Chinese medicine has regarded pregnancy as a potentially draining process and has developed routine restorative post natal treatments. In the West we seem to expect everyone to be a super-mum and bounce back immediately! Post birth treatment can start from about a week after delivery. It can be used to just rebuild your constitution or for specific problems such as:

Post Natal depression
Persistent after pains or discharge
Breast feeding problems
Night sweats
Headaches
Anxiety and irritability
Dizziness
Insomnia (other than from crying babies!)
Fatigue
